Intro
Hi all, and welcome to my Arcane Mage guide for Battle for Azeroth (8.0). In this guide I will go over everything you need to know to play Arcane in a Mythic raiding environment. Although not the focus of this guide, things read here should still apply to Mythic+ in most situations. I also wrote a very detailed guide over on Icy veins, so if you are interested in that, check it out here.
Changes in 8.0- All Artifact traits, including the Artifact ability Mark of Aluneth have been removed.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=12042/arcane-power is now on the Global Cooldown.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=205032/charged-up is now on the Global Cooldown.
- https://www.wowhead.com/spell=5143/arcane-missiles can now be cast without having any procs. https://wowhead.com/spell=5143/arcane-missiles has also been changed to no longer gain extra damage from Arcane Charges.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=30451 becomes faster to cast based on the amount of Arcane Charges.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=263725/clearcasting has been added. This is the new proc for Arcane. It lets you cast https://wowhead.com/spell=5143/arcane-missiles or 1449-arcane-explosion for free.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=1449/arcane-explosion has been changed to no longer gain extra damage from Arcane Charges, nor does it cost more Mana when cast repeatedly.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=1459/arcane-intellect has been added.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=475/remove-curse has been added.
- The talent https://wowhead.com/spell=236628-amplification has been changed. Instead of doing more damage with https://wowhead.com/spell=5143/arcane-missiles the more Arcane
- Charges you have, it now makes https://wowhead.com/spell=5143/arcane-missiles do more damage when you get https://www.wowhead.com/spell=263725/clearcasting, by shooting an extra missile.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=264354/rule-of-threes is a new talent, replacing Words of Power.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=236457/slipstream has been changed slightly. Because https://wowhead.com/spell=5143/arcane-missiles can be cast at any time in BfA, Slipstream has been changed to only allow movement when using https://wowhead.com/spell=5143/arcane-missiles with a https://www.wowhead.com/spell=263725/clearcasting proc.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=281482/reverberate is a new talent, replacing Erosion.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=210824/touch-of-the-magi a new talent, replacing Unstable Magic.
- https://wowhead.com/spell=210805/time-anomaly is a new talent, replacing Temporal Flux.
Talents
As always, what talents you pick depend a lot on the situation, but it also depends on what gear you have available. If you are uncertain at any point on what talents to pick for your character, you can sim it on Raidbots Talent Compare.
Single Target Talents
Level 15: https://wowhead.com/spell=264354-rule-of-threesRule of Threes is best on single target and any aoe situation upto 8 targets. https://wowhead.com/spell=205022/arcane-familiar is best on 8+ targets. It being the best on AoE may seem counterintuitive at first, since there is no direct component to Rule of Threes that boosts its AoE damage, however, after reaching 3 Arcane Charges, you can cast 1 Arcane Blast for free, which allows you to sustain Mana for longer while AoEing, allowing you to AoE longer.Level 30: https://wowhead.com/spell=212653 or https://wowhead.com/spell=236457Pick whichever you prefer to play with. I personally prefer Shimmer and use it on practically all fights over Slipstream.Level 45: https://wowhead.com/spell=1463 or https://wowhead.com/spell=116011Rune of Power is the best theoretical DPS choice for any amount of targets. However, Incanter's Flow is very close, and Rune of Power is quite restrictive, so it may not be practical for all encounters. Below, I have listed some reasons which may cause you to not pick Rune of Power, but instead go with Incanter's Flow:Level 60: https://wowhead.com/spell=205032- There are raid mechanics which you can not plan for in advance that may cause you to have to move out of your Rune of Power.
- There is a lot of movement required on the fight in general.
- It is also worth noting that Rune of Power is a lot harder to play with than Incanter's Flow , so it should not be used when you are not very comfortable with the spec and fight.

AoE Talents

Rotation The Arcane Mage rotation still consists of a Burn and a Conserve phase. Though due to the Mana changes in 8.0, the Conserve Phase is now a lot more aggressive than it was in 7.3.5. You go into the Burn Phase when your DPS cooldowns are up, and when you are out of Mana, you use https://wowhead.com/spell=12051/evocation to go back up to a 100% Mana. At this point, you will try to Conserve some of your Mana until your cooldowns are back up, and then the process repeats.
Burn Phase
The Burn phase commences at the start of the encounter, and whenever https://wowhead.com/spell=12042/arcane-power is off cooldown thereafter. It is important to ensure you will not be interrupted during the Burn phase, so avoid entering this part of the rotating during heavy movement or when volatile mechanics are active.
You can enter the Burn Phase when the following is all true:
- https://wowhead.com/spell=12042/arcane-power is ready;
- you have 4 charges of Arcane Charges;
- at least one charge of https://wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power is available, if running the talent;
- you have at least 50% Mana (30% if https://wowhead.com/spell=155147/overpowered is talented).
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=205032/charged-up if talented and you have 2 or less Arcane Charges.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=153626/arcane-orb if talented and if you do not have 4 Arcane Charges.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=114923/nether-tempest if talented and you have 4 Arcane Charges, and it is not up, or has less than 3 seconds remaining, and both https://wowhead.com/spell=12042/arcane-power and https://wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power are currently not active.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image, if talented.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=30451/arcane-blast if you got a Rule of Threes buff and you have Overpowered Talented.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power, if talented.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=12042/arcane-power.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=205025/presence-of-mind if https://wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power or https://wowhead.com/spell=12042/arcane-power would run out before finishing your next https://wowhead.com/spell=30451/arcane-blast.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=44425/arcane-barrage if there are 3 or more targets and you have 4 stacks of Arcane Charges.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=1449/arcane-explosion if there are 3 or more targets.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=5143/arcane-missiles if you have https://www.wowhead.com/spell=263725/clearcasting and have less than 95% Mana, and https://wowhead.com/spell=12042/arcane-power is not currently active.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=30451/arcane-blast.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=12051/evocation when out of Mana.
You should enter the Conserve Phase any time you are not in the Burn Phase. During the Conserve Phase you should try to maximize the amount of time spent casting https://wowhead.com/spell=30451/arcane-blast with 4 Arcane Charges, while keeping your Mana high enough during the Conserve Phase, so that when your https://wowhead.com/spell=12042/arcane-power comes off cooldown you are able to Burn as much Mana as possible within that window for optimal output. Below we have listed the priority in which you should use your spell during the Conserve Phase.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=205032/charged-up if talented and you have 0 Arcane Charges.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=114923/nether-tempest if talented and you have 4 Arcane Charges, and it is not up, or has less than 3 seconds remaining.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=153626/arcane-orb if talented and if you do not have 4 Arcane Charges.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power if you will cap on Rune of Power charges before https://wowhead.com/spell=12042/arcane-power is ready, and you have 4 Arcane Charges.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=30451/arcane-blast if Rule of Threes is talented and you have the Rule of Threes buff.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=1449/arcane-explosion if there are 3 or more targets and you have https://www.wowhead.com/spell=263725/clearcasting .
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=5143/arcane-missiles if you have https://www.wowhead.com/spell=263725/clearcasting and have less than 95% Mana.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=44425/arcane-barrage if you have 4 Arcane Charges and you have less than 60% Mana (80% Mana if you would cap on Rune of Power charges before Arcane Power is ready) or you have 4 Arcane Charges and there are 3 or more targets.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=1449/arcane-explosion if there are 3 or more targets.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=157980/supernova , if talented.
- Cast https://wowhead.com/spell=30451/arcane-blast.
If you are running https://www.wowhead.com/spell=264352/equipoise, you should conserve at 80% Mana, instead of 60% Mana.
Gear Stat Weights
Intellect is by far the best stat for Arcane Mages. , and All secondary stats are very close. You can use the list below as a default guideline, but I strongly suggest always simming yourself via Raidbots.
- Intellect;
- Critical Strike;
- Haste;
- Mastery;
- Versatility.
Before i get started on Azerite Gear, the absolute best way to determine what items to equip is by using Raidbots Top Gear. This includes Azerite Gear and trinkets.
What Azerite Traits should I look for?
https://www.wowhead.com/spell=264352/equipoise is the best single-target Azerite Trait. Make sure you conserve above 80% Mana when using this trait, instead of 60% Mana.
https://www.wowhead.com/spell=288989/tr ... s-covenant is the second best single target trait, and good for AoE DPS as well. Keep in mind the downside however, as on some progress fights it might not have as good uptime as you would want. The effect might also kill you, so pick the trait carefully.
https://www.wowhead.com/spell=274594/arcane-pressure and https://www.wowhead.com/spell=278537/explosive-echo are very close for AoE, with Arcane Pressure winning out if you use the https://wowhead.com/spell=281482/reverberate talent, otherwise Explosive Echo.
