Introduction

Fire is a spec that revolves around critical strikes and burst damage, while possessing some unique mechanics such as casting while casting. In Shadowlands Fire remains a strong progression spec due to its execute, high mobility, cheat death and immunity. This guide should cover all you need to know to get started playing your Fire mage in Mythic+ or Raids.

1 - Major Changes

If you are returning to mage after one or more expansions, here's some important fundamental changes that you should be aware of since last time you played.

Battle for Azeroth Shadowlands

2 - Overview

Fire as a spec involves maximising the number Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak, and maximising damage during our Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion window.
Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak is gained by achieving two direct critical strikes in a row. One critical strike gives us Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up, and a critical strike while Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up is active gives us Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak. Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak makes our next Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast or Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike instant cast and doubles its http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite damage.
In order to assist us with this, Fire mage possesses the unique ability to cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast while casting, making it easier to convert Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up into Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak.

Fire has several tools to maximise the number of critical strikes and Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streaks:

4 - Talents

Example build for a single target raid encounter:
Example build for a raid encounter with adds:
Example build for heavy AOE, such as pure add fights or Mythic+:
Tier 1

Image
http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter provide very similar DPS depending on character and the choice will come down to where the damage is most useful.
http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch gives us the ability to use almost our entire rotation while moving when the target is below 30% health. This is incredibly powerful for progression encounters as the execute phase is very often the most difficult phase of the encounter.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter currently gives the highest DPS in the opener. You should consider how valuable the first 10% of the fight is, as it may be more useful to talent into damage that helps early on if the fight has a difficult phase one.

Due to the execute phase of a fight generally being the toughest and dragging out due to mechanics and occasionally deaths, I recommend http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch for almost every raid encounter.
In the rare scenario that you cannot take advantage of the other two talents, such as enemies that start or end at different health percentages, default to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205020/pyromaniac.

Tier 2

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer is the default choice here, it is an incredibly powerful mobility tool and with proper usage allows us almost 100% uptime.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235365/blazing-soul has niche uses when a 2nd http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1953/blink isn’t needed, but this is a rare scenario and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer will likely still be better.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157981/blast-wave provides close to no value in current raid encounters.

Tier 3

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power provides the highest damage and has good synergy with both Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor, http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm and https://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. However on movement intensive encounters or encounters where you cannot get full http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power value, you can consider http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow or https://shadowlands.wowhead.com/spell=3 ... ocus-magic. Currently however http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power is powerful enough that it should be taken in almost every scenario.

Tier 4

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on is the default choice on single target, the reduced cooldown on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast provides us with more Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak over the course of a fight, and the 3 charges increase our http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion damage.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury provides the highest damage on AOE. However due to the short range on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=31661/dragons-breath taking advantage of this damage is not always possible. Only choose this talent if you can reliably be in melee range of multiple targets.
https://shadowlands.wowhead.com/spell=3 ... -the-ashes is currently not useful in any situation.

Tier 5

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236058/frenetic-speed is the default choice here, it provides additional mobility especially when combined with http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205036/ice-ward and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost provide very little value on most raid encounters. If an encounter requires you to control adds, consider which talent gives more benefit to your raid. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=122/frost-nova is faster and more forgiving, but http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost can be used from range.

Tier 6

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration is the default choice for single target, it does low damage but it's better than nothing. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration should also be used on any fight where you want to spend https://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak on Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast regardless of target counts.

I recommend http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch in any situation where you want to spend https://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak on Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike.

Tier 7

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling is currently the best performing talent, however this is somewhat dependent on the cooldown reduction being useful; which in some scenarios due to fight timings or downtime, may not be the case.

If you find yourself in the situation where you need to use one of the other talents, keep in mind these 2 are character dependent - before making this decision I must insist that you sim yourself first. Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor usually sims the highest, and in addition provides higher mobility, more predictability, and lower risk. Therefore I would consider Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor the default pick. If you find that http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm is simming significantly higher for you or you're facing a low movement encounter and don't mind the RNG, consider the talent. However due to the risk and large amounts of RNG I don't recommend http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm on progress unless its simming significantly higher.

5 - Rotation

Rotation Overview

While outside Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, follow this sequence:
1. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball until one critically strikes and gives us http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up.
2. Use a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast to convert the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up into a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak.
3. Consume the Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak using Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast.
4. Repeat the sequence, using any additional abilities such as Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor, http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm procs in between.

Note that by the time a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball reaches the target and critically strikes you will be already casting another Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball - continue to cast, use Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast while casting, and use Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast at the end of the cast.

We always want to cast a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball before a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast so that both spells hit the target at the same time. This is because there is a small grace window where if one spell crits and the other doesn’t, we don’t lose the Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up gained from the spell that crit. Do note that this trick does not work with Scorch due to its faster travel time, so keep that in mind when moving or using http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch.

Priority outside Combustion

1. Cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power
2. Hardcast a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast with a http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm proc
3. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor (Attempt to sync http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power or http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion - but do not activate http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion until after Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor)
4. Cast http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames if you are about to cap on charges
5. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast if you are about to cap on charges
6. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast if you have Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak
7. Cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast if you have Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up
8. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch if the target is below 30% and you have http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch talented
9. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball

Combustion

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is our main DPS cooldown and requires a small amount of setup. In order to ensure we maximise our damage during Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, we want to minimise the amount of hard casting we do and aim to chain instant casts. This means we want to enter Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion with 2+ charges of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast, and 2+ charges of http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames. Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion should be used on cooldown as much as possible. It can be delayed slightly for things such as extra damage phases, or add spawns to take advantage of the additional http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite damage as long as you do not lose a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion cast during that encounter.

Combustion Priority:

1. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor
2. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast with a https://www.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm
3. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast with a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak
4. Cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast with a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up
5. Cast http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames with a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up
6. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch

An ideal Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion consists of chaining instant casts. We generally want to alternate between http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames in between Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast to maintain https://www.wowhead.com/spell=336821/infernal-cascade.

Our goal during Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is to maximise the number of Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast we cast, however this is going to depend on your haste (which will vary per Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion due to haste buffs). There is no magic number or goal for how many Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast you should cast during Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. The ideal number is "as many as you can".

As we are trying to maximise the number of Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streaks during Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch should be used instead of Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball due to the quick cast and instant travel time.

Please note that casting Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast with a https://www.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm proc inside Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is a very minor gain. If there is even the slightest chance that you may have to cancel the cast you should not take the risk.

Combustion Sequences and the opener

Mage has no special requirements or setup in the opener. After your pre-cast you simply go straight into Combustion and your normal rotation.

With infernal cascade, it can be a DPS increase during your first Fireball cast to use Combustion into one, or two (if your opening Fireball didn't crit) Fire Blasts. The idea is to already have at least one Infernal Cascade stack when you use your first Pyroblast.

Some players may find the timing on this tight, these 2 macros may help. Use the first macro to activate Combustion and cast Fire Blast to gain the first stack of Infernal Cascade. Press it again if necessary (i.e. Your opening Fireball didn't crit).

Code: Select all

#showtooltip Fire Blast /cast Combustion /cast Fire Blast

Then spam the second macro as your Fireball is finishing.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip Pyroblast /cast Combustion /cast Pyroblast /use 14 /cast Blood Fury(Racial) /cast Berserking(Racial)

This will also ensure you activate trinkets/racials. Afterwards just press your keys as normal.

Fireball Opener
Image

Scorch Opener
Image

Scorch opener vs Fireball opener
From a DPS perspective the Fireball opener is strictly better than the Scorch opener, however you will still see some players perform the latter. This is because the Fireball opener is significantly more error prone, especially when lag is involved. It is very easy to accidently press Fire Blast one too many, or one too few times. The downside of the Scorch opener is that your first Pyroblast will only hit with 1 stack of IC instead of 2.

Opener with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter:
Pre-cast Pyroblast, however Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion should not be activated until the boss reaches 90% health. Until then, spam Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast until the target reaches 90%, using Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames if they are at maximum charges. Use http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power (if talented) at the beginning of your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter window. Once the boss reaches 90% health move into the "normal" opener above.

Note that when using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter the target health and critical strike chance of the spell are checked on cast, not on impact. This means that if you cast a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball or Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast while your target is above 90% health, but they drop below 90% health before the spell reaches them; the spell will still have 100% critical strike chance.

Covenant Abilities

Generally mage covenant abilities should be used on cooldown with some optimisations:

Kyrian: Venthyr: Night Fae: Necrolords:
AOE Rotation

AOE rotation with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch: AOE rotation without http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch: AOE during https://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion: Obviously its worth noting that while https://www.wowhead.com/spell=145451/arcane-explosion is the AOE spell of choice without http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch; if you're ever in a situation where you want to be actively AOEing, you very likely will and should have http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch talented.

Hard-Casting Flamestrike

On 2 targets it can be worth hard casting Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike if you have http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch talented. The general idea is to be always hard casting Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike, while using all Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast charges to generate Hot Streaks while ignoring our filler spell Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball. If you are talented into http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch, begin using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch as normal once the boss reaches 30% health.

Do note that while this is a DPS gain if both targets are hit by the Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike and the full http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch duration. You should consider how realistic this is in dungeon and raid encounters, as due to the long Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike cast time it may be worth just playing normally.

In addition with https://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling talented keep in mind that this playstyle will result in much longer https://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion cooldowns

Trinket Usage

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion no longer buffs the damage of trinkets, however some trinkets will still benefit our Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion by giving us additional stats. You should always overlap these items with Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. If you have multiple on use trinkets you should prioritise the one that benefits Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion the most during Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. You must ensure you take into account the 20 second shared cooldown when activating your second trinket as you don't want to delay Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion to wait for your first trinket.

You should generally try to avoid using two on use trinkets that rely on Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion synergy.
Note that https://www.wowhead.com/spell=336821/infernal-cascade means that trinkets that deal fire damage synergize slightly better with Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion than those that don't.

If you find yourself using https://www.wowhead.com/item=184019/sou ... bonus=6805 with 2 on use trinkets; use your other trinket first, followed by https://www.wowhead.com/item=184019/sou ... bonus=6805, then cancel the https://www.wowhead.com/spell=345211/soul-ignition buff at 2 stacks of https://www.wowhead.com/spell=336821/infernal-cascade to put the trinket on cooldown ASAP.

Legendary Usage

Disciplinary Command:
https://www.wowhead.com/spell=327365/di ... ry-command should be activated on close to cooldown, but should be held for https://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion if https://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is less than 30 seconds away. You always hold https://www.wowhead.com/spell=327365/di ... ry-command for https://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion and not the other way around.

6 - Gearing

With all gearing related decisions you should trust your own sims over any generic lists or advice you see on the internet.

Stats

Fire has no stat breakpoints, no hard caps, and no specific stat percentages to aim for - that's not how stats work anymore.
Fire stats weights are a little closer than some other specs with the exception of crit, and mastery on a single target. Due to the large Intellect stat budget on items, item level will usually be an upgrade. Stat weights vary depending on your current gear and talents. To produce an accurate stat priority or to accurately compare items you must sim yourself. Remember that Mastery value increases when cleaving, so consider itemizing for higher mastery on multi target fights but be careful to still maintain good priority damage if that's what's required.

Generally prioritise stats like so:
1. Intellect
2. Haste
3. Mastery / Versatility
4. Critical Strike

Some notes about how talents affect our stats:
Trinkets

Generally you'll want only one on use trinket that benefits from https://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion (https://www.wowhead.com/item=184019/sou ... bonus=6805 being the exception). I recommend you try to get a https://www.wowhead.com/item=175921/sin ... f-ferocity or https://www.wowhead.com/item=175884/sin ... bonus=6786 as they are extremely powerful for how easy they are to obtain.
For full trinket data, please check out my sim dump

Legendaries

Legendaries should be crafted using https://www.wowhead.com/item=173160/missive-of-haste and https://www.wowhead.com/item=173163/mis ... ersatility. Whenever upgrading legendaries keep in mind that higher level legendaries do not have a stronger effect, only better stats. You should also aim to craft legendaries in the slots that have the most stats.

Prioritise slots as follows:
1. Head/Chest/Legs
2. Neck/Ring
3. Shoulders/Waist/Hands/Feet
4. Back/Wrists

S Tier: A Tier: Do not craft any other Legendary for Fire PvE.

Conduits

Remember that the level of your conduit can impact which conduit pulls ahead, as always I recommend you sim yourself; but assuming equal item levels you should be able to follow these rankings.

Single Target Conduit Ranking:
AOE Conduit Ranking:
Gems, Enchants, and Consumables

Gem and Enchants: Consumables:
7 - Covenants
Covenant Ranking

Fire Covenant Ranking:
1. Night Fae
2. Necrolords
3. Venthyr
4. Kyrian

Fire definitely has one of the more balanced covenant setups for single target encounters, however outside of that some rather large gaps start to form. Personally I think your covenant has to do more for you than give you 2% sim DPS. Night Fae and Necrolords both provide incredibly serious strengths that in my book make the other 2 covenants not worth considering.

Night Fae
Night Fae provides the best covenant ability for Fire in http://wowhead.com/spell=314791/shifting-power. http://wowhead.com/spell=314791/shifting-power provides a fairly hefty boost to the amount of https://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast charges we generate over the course of an encounter, as well as providing some snap AOE which can be very valuable in Castle Nathria. This combined with very competitive soulbinds makes Night Fae the best choice for Fire in both raids and Mythic+.

Necrolords
Necrolords currently falls behind Night Fae for Fire. However you need to keep an eye on this covenant for 2 reasons:
  • It's much better than Night Fae for the other 2 specs.
  • Heavy cooldown based damage is often incredibly, incredibly powerful for progression encounters, especially when it scales well with targets.
In a world where we aren't trying to hit very specific timings Necrolord is very competitive with Night Fae.

Venthyr
While Venthyr is incredibly close due to its powerful soulbinds, it falls behind just slightly. Especially since https://www.wowhead.com/spell=314793/mirrors-of-torment does not scale well with multiple targets as it only affects one target. That said Venthyr is incredibly powerful for Frost. If you multispec or mainly focus on raids Venthyr's value increases.

Kyrian
Kyrian fields fairly versatile soulbinds combined with a decent ability in https://shadowlands.wowhead.com/spell=3 ... iant-spark. Kyrian is absolute king for single target, the main problem with Kyrian is that it falls off heavily on multiple targets.

To see the data driving these decisions, please check out my sim dump where I have provided the DPS of each ability and soulbind at various Renown levels on both single target and AOE.

When evaluating covenants it’s important not to tunnel vision on the signature ability. Covenants are a package deal of 2 abilities, a covenant specific conduit, and 3 soulbinds. Below I’ve outlined the major selling points of each Covenant and soulbind.
Note: Soulbind abilities that are denoted with an (x) require you to sacrifice a potency conduit.

Kyrian

Abilities: Conduit: Soulbinds:
For Kyrian, you should always choose Pelagos.
Image

Venthyr

Abilities: Conduit: Soulbinds:
For Venthyr Nadija and Theotar provide fairly similar DPS.
Image

Night Fae

Abilities: Conduit: Soulbinds:
For Night Fae Niya, Dreamweaver and Korayn are all competitive options. Something to keep in mind with Korayn is that https://shadowlands.wowhead.com/spell=3 ... nt-tactics will not be as powerful as it seems, as the first part of the encounter is often the fastest and the easiest.
Image

Necrolords

Abilities: Conduit: Soulbinds:
For Necrolord Emeni and Heirmir are fairly close, though Emeni will edge out most of the time.

8 - Racials

Fire generally has more impactful DPS racials than some of the other specs in the game. However, still do not underestimate races with utility racials.
Horde Alliance
9 - Macros and Add-ons

Raidbots combined with the Simulationcraft Add-on now make simming your character incredibly easy. There is no longer an excuse to not be simming if you want to find upgrades and accurate stat weights.

Weak Auras is the only add-on that I consider mandatory for World of Warcraft raiding. It is incredibly powerful and incredibly customisable. If you don't want to go through the effort of creating your own, there are a few I recommend:
You can also check out Wago.io to find other premade Weak Aura's for both mages and boss encounters.

BigWigs or Deadly Boss Mods provide boss timers and notifications. Deadly Boss Mods is a bit more "in your face" with notifications and warnings whereas BigWigs is slightly quieter. Personal preference between the two.

Details! is by far the best damage meter out there. Makes it easier to analyse wipes and DPS while being easy on your CPU.

There are also some small optimizations that can be made through macros in order to master your fire mage.

Macro all cooldowns, racials, and items into one key.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /cast Combustion /cast Blood Fury /cast Berserking /use 11 /use 12 /use 13 /use 14 /use 2

@cursor macros automatically cast ground targeted abilities wherever your mouse cursor is, saving you a click.
Example with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike, works for all other ground targeted spells, such as http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /cast [@cursor] Flamestrike

Can be used to cancel http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block and immediately http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer. Useful when Ice Blocked in a void zone as you'll http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer out and take no damage.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /cancelaura Ice Block /cast Blink

The macro below can be used to automatically cancel http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block if you try to cast a spell while blocked; and automatically targets something if you try to cast a spell with no target. [nochanneling] will also allow you to spam the key without cancelling https://www.wowhead.com/spell=314791/shifting-power.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /cancelaura Ice Block /cast [nochanneling] Fireball /targetenemy [noexists][dead]

Uses whatever you have in the tier 3 talent row. Defaults to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow or no talent.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /use [talent:3/2]Focus Magic; [talent:3/3]Rune of Power; Scorch

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2139/counterspell macro. Prioritizes Mouseover > Focus > Target.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip Counterspell /cast [@mouseover,harm][@Focus,harm][harm] Counterspell

The same macro but for http://www.wowhead.com/spell=30449/spellsteal

Code: Select all

#showtooltip Spellsteal /cast [@mouseover,harm][@Focus,harm][harm] Spellsteal

Mouseover http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=475/remove-curse

Code: Select all

#showtooltip Remove Curse /cast [@cursor]Remove Curse

10 - Advanced
Canceling Alter Time

https://shadowlands.wowhead.com/spell=108978/alter-time snapshots our current location and health. The spell can then be reactivated within 10 seconds to return us to said location and health. However if the buff expires we will be returned regardless, which sometimes we may not want to do.

If we cancel the https://shadowlands.wowhead.com/spell=108978/alter-time buff, it will not automatically be activated at the end of the duration, allowing us to stay where we are.

Code: Select all

/cancelaura Alter Time

Rune of Power Range

An often overlooked property of mage is how big the radius of https://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power is. A lot of players express frustration with this talent but by properly tracking the buff you can frequently move quite far and still benefit from https://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power. I recommend you have a weak aura to track the buff (Here is mine ).

Here is an example showing how far you can be while still benefiting from rune:

11 - FAQ

Q: What does the acronym IB stand for?
A: https://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast. The spell used to be called Inferno Blast and IB is used to prevent confusion with https://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball.

Q: Does Fire scale more with stats or crit than other specs?
A: No it doesn't. This is incredibly outdated information and hasn't been true for 10 years at this point. Fire does not start expansions relatively weaker and become relatively stronger later, specs do not work like that anymore.

Q: How does Podtender interact with Cauterize?
A: They will not both activate on the same "death". If both are available, priority will be given to Cauterize.

Q: What Soulbind do I use?
A: Answer this with Raidbots top gear. Due to how Renown works the best Soulbind may change week to week, it's important to learn how to fish.
At max renown generally use Korayn on any fights where the reverse execute isn't useless, default to Niya otherwise.

Q: Why do your guides not have BIS lists?
A: A few reasons. First off BIS setups are only BIS once the entire set has been complete, which is likely long after your gear is actually relevant. Changing one item could mean that another item is no longer BIS. Second, with the current gearing system in World of Warcraft gear acquisition is incredibly random; it is far more productive to figure out how to sim and seek short term upgrades than it is to spend months chasing an ideal setup.

Q: Should I use Arcane Momentum?
A: Person preference. Generally I would advise against it as its more error prone and you should be able to do everything you need with proper camera control and default blink.

Q: How do I sim Focus Magic trade?
A: external_buffs.focus_magic=1

Q: How do I sim Shifting Power without the damage?
A: override.spell_data=effect.815217.sp_coefficient=0

Q: What stat percentages should I aim for?
A: Nothing, you don't aim for specific percentages of stats. The thought process behind this question is simply a misunderstanding of how stats work. There are very few stat breakpoints in the game that are of utmost importance, and stats generally complement each other. You equip the gear that gives you the most DPS with almost no thought on what stat percentages that leaves you at (hint: it doesn't matter).

Q: Should I use pawn?
A: No, it's an outdated addon, based on an outdated way of thinking about the game. It relies too heavily on stat weights being an accurate method of comparing gear, which they aren't.

Q: What professions should I use?
A: In Shadowlands professions don't really matter. Almost nothing requires you to actually have the profession to use except for a few niche items in Engineering.

https://www.wowhead.com/spell=336821/infernal-cascade
https://www.wowhead.com/spell=336992/di ... -the-grove

Tips and Tricks:
  • You will need to save multiple mobility spells for the first overlap, you will have a few seconds after the suck ends to move your seed.
  • During the second overlap, you will need to move your seed during the suck. You should save all mobility spells for this point, and use https://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block if you enter the portal with not enough time to return.
  • Use https://www.wowhead.com/spell=108978/alter-time before going through the portal to instantly travel back rather than waiting for the portal cooldown.

https://www.wowhead.com/spell=336992/di ... -the-grove

Tips and Tricks:
  • This is functionally a single target fight. The DPS check on the boss is tight and adds will just die to passive cleave from the raid.
  • Be very active with seeking out and going to far away soaks, abuse your mobility.
  • If you get targeted by the add cast during https://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block, you will not get a debuff and no add will spawn.

Tips and Tricks:
  • If you find attendants living for a long time during the final phase, hold https://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion for them. If you have multiple players doing this you should ensure you are using cooldowns on different attendants.

Are pyroclasm procs still worth casting in combustion? I know bracer procs are but pyroclasm procs are 225% damage as opposed to 300% damage. Also, is searing touch worth taking if you have high crit (70%)? It looks really good for early bfa raids, but I feel like searing touch at 150% damage instead of 300% is a bit rough considering you're just taking it for the guaranteed crit at that point. Unless I'm doing the math wrong.

Post hotfix its now an extremely minor loss to cast pyroclasm in combustion. With the risk associated with it I recommend not casting it unless you desperately need burst damage. Ive updated the rotation section to reflect that.

Searing touch is taken for the mobility right now - not the damage. Its especially poor combined with belt due to the DR of using both. I wouldnt recommend searing touch in pre-patch. In BFA we'll have to see how it looks post tuning.

For two target cleave yes, for fights like High Command, or Portal Keeper PF is outplaying FO at the moment due to consistent add cleave and the instant burst aoe that PF provides is superior.

Yes because the damage stacks from both Pyroclasm and your bracers. There's time however where Pyroclasm isn't the best option but maintaining the bracers are.

In the talent section theres an example Mythic+ build. For legendaries I would probably play Head/Bracers. The guide will be updated to be more in depth for Mythic+ come BFA. But I didnt consider it worth it right now.

My sims are showing the Archmage ring + bracers as slightly ahead of bracers + Koralon's for both ST and AOE fights, but by very little. For me the extra instants from PF's in combination with the new tier 1 talent make archmage superior to Koralon's for pre-patch. PF also helps in world PVP quite a bit.

Trust sims with your own character over those from other profiles. Different off pieces can cause anything to happen. Archmage certainly isn't bad after the patch.

Glynny's sims are done with Rune of Power, mine are Incanters Flow. I believe his sims are also slightly longer duration.

Is there a break point in which crit becomes the best stat? I see on guides crit as the generic best stat. Obviously you have to sim yourself but crit is always my lowest lol and it’s still terrible for me even if I’m close to 60% crit . So I guess I’m confused why it’s generalized our best if I can in no way make it mine . I want it to be I guess because since 8.0 fire has just felt so inconsistent and really lackluster for me

The opposite is the case. The more crit you get the worse it gets. At what point other secondaries take over depends on a lot of different factors such as talent choice (firestarter/searing touch devalue crit, kindling favors crit), legendary choice (belt), tier bonusses (t19/t20 devaluie crit) or how high your other stats are.

Crit gets a bit better the more you have. Stats are sort of wack in prepatch. Firestarter + belt are going to reduce your crit value and this is the optimal setup right now.

Theres no breakpoint where crit takes over. Unfortunately Fire stats change somewhat based on talents/legos. Hence why general stats dont really work. The default profile for T21 was using shard/pyromaniac which is why it heavily valued crit.
