Introduction

Fire is a spec that revolves around critical strikes and burst damage, while possessing some unique mechanics such as casting while casting. In Battle for Azeroth Fire remains a strong progression spec due to its high mobility, cheat death and immunity. This guide should cover all you need to know to get started playing your Fire mage in Mythic+ or Raids.

1 - Changes from Legion

Fire has received no baseline changes, naturally the spec plays differently due to the removal of the artifact. On top of that there are several talent changes:

The artifact ability http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194466/phoenixs-flames has returned as a tier 4 talent in place of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205033/controlled-burn.

The Legendary http://www.wowhead.com/item=132406/marq ... e-sun-king has returned as a tier 7 talent in place of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198929/cinderstorm.

The Legendary http://www.wowhead.com/item=132454/kora ... ning-touch has returned as a tier 1 talent in place of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration has moved to tier 6 in place of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157976/unstable-magic.

Mages once again have http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=475/remove-curse and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=1459/arcane-intellect.

Damage buffs such as http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow only affect spell damage. Other sources of damage, such as trinkets, are unaffected.

2 - Overview

Fire as a spec involves maximising the number Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak, and maximising damage during our Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion window.
Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak is gained by achieving two direct critical strikes in a row. One critical strike gives us Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up, and a critical strike while Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up is active gives us Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak. Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak makes our next Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast or Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike instant cast and doubles its http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite damage.
In order to assist us with this, Fire mage possesses the unique ability to cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast while casting, making it easier to convert Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up into Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak.

Fire has several tools to maximise the number of critical strikes and Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streaks:

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=117216/critical-mass gives us a flat 15% critical strike chance, and increases the critical strike rating we gain from other sources such as gear by an additional 10%.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157642/enh ... rotechnics gives Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball an additional 10% critical strike chance each time it fails to crit.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion gives us 100% critical strike chance for the duration.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter makes Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball and Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast a guaranteed critical strike while the target is at or above 90% health.

http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch makes http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch a guaranteed critical strike while the target is at or below 30% health.

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames are guaranteed to critically strike.

3 - Abilities

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball is our filler ability, it does low damage and is used generate http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up. Each time Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball fails to crit it gains an additional 10% critical strike chance, stacking until Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball finally crits.

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast is a medium damage ability that always crits and is usable while casting. The primary use of Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast is to convert Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-ups gained from Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball into Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streaks so we can use our payoff spells.

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast is a high damage single target ability with a long cast time. It becomes an instant cast spell while Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak is active.

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike is an AOE ability with a long cast time. It becomes an instant cast spell while Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak is active.

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch is a very low damage, very short cast time ability that can be cast while moving.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=31661/dragons-breath is a frontal cone AOE that disorientates all targets hit. It does okay damage but has extremely short range. Mainly used as crowd control or a quick interrupt.

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is our primary DPS cooldown. It gives us 100% critical strike chance for 10 seconds, and converts 50% of our excess critical strike into mastery for the duration.

Utility abilities:

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1953/blink teleports us 20 yards forwards and is our main mobility tool.

http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=1459/arcane-intellect is a castable buff that increases your groups Intellect by 10% for 1 hour.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235313/blazing-barrier gives us a small shield for 60 seconds; useful for periods of high damage.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block is an immunity that prevents all damage, but we cannot move or cast spells for the duration. Can be cancelled by pressing http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block again.

http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=475/remove-curse dispels all curses from a friendly target.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=66/invisibility turns us invisible after a short delay. Can be used to fizzle several targeted boss abilities.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=30449/spellsteal steals 1 beneficial magic buff from the target. Note some incredibly powerful buffs cannot be stolen and will simply be purged.

4 - Talents

Tier 1

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter makes Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball and Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast a guaranteed critical strike while the target is at or above 90% health.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205020/pyromaniac gives our Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak an 8% chance to instantly reactivate when consumed.

http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch makes Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch a guaranteed critical strike and gives it 150% additional damage on targets at or below 30% health.

http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter provide very similar DPS depending on character and the choice will come down to where the damage is most useful.

http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch gives us the ability to use almost our entire rotation while moving when the target is below 30% health. This is incredibly powerful for progression encounters as the execute phase is very often the most difficult phase of the encounter.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter currently gives the highest DPS in the opener. You should consider how valuable the first 10% of the fight is, as it may be more useful to talent into damage that helps early on if the fight has a difficult phase one.

Due to the execute phase of a fight generally being the toughest and dragging out due to mechanics and occasionally deaths, I recommend http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch for almost every raid encounter.

In the rare scenario that you cannot take advantage of the other two talents, such as enemies that start or end at different health percentages, default to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205020/pyromaniac.

Tier 2

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235365/blazing-soul causes http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1953/blink to automatically activate http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235313/blazing-barrier, this does not put http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235313/blazing-barrier on cooldown

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer replaces http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1953/blink, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer functions similar to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1953/blink, but has an additional charge, can be cast while casting, and is not on the global cooldown.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157981/blast-wave is an AOE ability around our character that deals a small amount of damage while knocking back and slowing all enemies hit.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer is the default choice here, it is an incredibly powerful mobility tool and with proper usage allows us almost 100% uptime.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235365/blazing-soul has niche uses when a 2nd http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1953/blink isn’t needed, but this is a rare scenario and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer will likely still be better.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157981/blast-wave provides close to no value in current raid encounters.

Tier 3

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow is a passive damage buff that fluctuates between 4% and 20%

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image is a fire and forget cooldown that creates 3 copies of our character for 40 seconds, these copies do not mimic our abilities and simply cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball for the duration. They inherit our stats except Mastery.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power is an active ability that places a rune on the ground for 10 seconds. Standing near the rune increases our spell damage by 40%.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image does not compete with the other two options.

The other two talents are situational, the choice is encounter and role dependent.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power provides the highest damage and has good synergy with both Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm. However on movement intensive encounters or encounters where you cannot get full http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power value, consider http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow unless you really need the burst damage.

Tier 4

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on reduces the cooldown of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast by 2 seconds and grants an additional charge.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury makes http://www.wowhead.com/spell=31661/dragons-breath a guaranteed critical strike and causes it to contribute to Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak.

http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames does high damage to our target and splashes a small amount of damage to nearby enemies. Always critically strikes.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on is the default choice on both single target and AOE, the reduced cooldown on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast provides us with more Hot Streaks over the course of a fight, and the 3 charges increase our http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion damage.

http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames is currently outclassed by http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on on single target and sustained AOE. However it drastically increases our burst damage on AOE, so it may be worth considering if this is something that you find you need.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury provides the highest damage on AOE. However due to the short range on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=31661/dragons-breath taking advantage of this damage is not always possible. Only choose this talent if you can reliably be in melee range of multiple targets.

Tier 5

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236058/frenetic-speed increases our movement speed by 30% for 3 seconds after casting Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205036/ice-ward gives http://www.wowhead.com/spell=122/frost-nova 2 charges.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost creates a Ring that incapacitates up to 10 enemies that touch it for 10 seconds.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236058/frenetic-speed is the default choice here, it provides additional mobility especially when combined with http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205036/ice-ward and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost provide very little value on most raid encounters. If an encounter requires you to control adds, consider which talent gives more benefit to your raid. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=122/frost-nova is faster and more forgiving, but http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost can be used from range.

Tier 6

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch causes Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike to leave behind a patch of fire for 8 seconds that deals damage over time.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration is a passive that causes Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball to apply a DOT to the target and occasionally causes enemies affected by http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration or http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite to pulse AOE damage.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=44457/living-bomb places a DOT on the target that explodes at the end of the duration, dealing damage to nearby enemies and spreading http://www.wowhead.com/spell=44457/living-bomb to any enemy hit. This effect does not spread further.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration is the default choice for single target, it does low damage but it's better than nothing.

For multitarget encounters there is no strictly better answer between http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=44457/living-bomb, it depends on the type of AOE that is required.

I recommend http://www.wowhead.com/spell=44457/living-bomb on any encounter where priority damage is more important than add damage, as you can continue to Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast your primary target while using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=44457/living-bomb and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite to handle add damage. The other primary use of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=44457/living-bomb is burst damage at extremely high target counts.

I recommend http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch on any encounter where AOE damage is more important than priority damage and you want to spend Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streaks on Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike. You should avoid http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch if the target's are constantly moving or don't live long enough to get full value from http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch.

Tier 7

Image
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling causes Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball, Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast, Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames critical strikes to reduce the cooldown of Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion by 1 second.

http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm gives a 15% chance for our next hard cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast to deal 225% additional damage whenever we consume Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak.

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor is a ground targeted, hard hitting ability that leaves behind a patch of fire that deals damage for 8 seconds. The initial damage from the Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor is split between all targets hit.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling is currently outclassed by the other options unless you think having Combustion during certain windows is more valuable.

The other 2 talents are character dependent - before making this decision I must insist that you sim yourself first. Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor usually sims the highest, and in addition provides higher mobility, more predictability, and lower risk. Therefore I would consider Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor the default pick. However some variables (mainly the addition of https://www.wowhead.com/spell=288755/wildfire) increase the power of http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm. If you find that http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm is simming significantly higher for you or you're facing a low movement encounter and don't mind the RNG, consider the talent. However due to the risk and large amounts of RNG I don't recommend http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm on progress unless its simming significantly higher.

Example build for heavy AOE, such as pure add fights or Mythic+:

5 - Rotation

Rotation Overview

While outside Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, follow this sequence:
1. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball until one critically strikes and gives us http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up.
2. Use a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast to convert the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up into a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak.
3. Consume the Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak using Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast.
4. Repeat the sequence, using any additional abilities such as Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor, http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm procs in between.

Note that by the time a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball reaches the target and critically strikes you will be already casting another Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball - continue to cast, use Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast while casting, and use Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast at the end of the cast.

We always want to cast a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball before a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast so that both spells hit the target at the same time. This is because there is a small grace window where if one spell crits and the other doesn’t, we don’t lose the Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up gained from the spell that crit. Do note that this trick does not work with Scorch due to its faster travel time, so keep that in mind when moving or using http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch.

Priority outside Combustion

1. Cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image
2. Cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power if you are about to cap on charges, have a http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm proc, or about to enter Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion (ALWAYS save one charge for http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion)
3. Hardcast a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast with a http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm proc
4. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor (Attempt to sync http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power - but do not activate http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion until after Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor)
5. Cast http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames if you are about to cap on charges
6. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast if you are about to cap on charges
7. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast if you have Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak
8. Cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast if you have Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up
9. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch if the target is below 30% and you have http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch talented
10. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball

Combustion

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is our main DPS cooldown and requires a small amount of setup. In order to ensure we maximise our damage during Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, we want to minimise the amount of hard casting we do and aim to chain instant casts. This means we want to enter Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion with 2+ charges of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast, and 2+ charges of http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames.
If talented into http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power, 1 charge should always be saved for Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion and it should be used immediately before casting Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion should be used on cooldown as much as possible. It can be delayed slightly for things such as extra damage phases, or add spawns to take advantage of the additional http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite damage as long as you do not lose a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion cast during that encounter.

Combustion Priority:

1. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor
2. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast with a https://www.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm
3. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast with a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak
4. Cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast with a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-upb
5. Cast http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames with a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up
6. Cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch

An ideal Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion begins with a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak and consists of chaining instant casts.

Example with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on:
Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast

Example with http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames:
Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast

As we are trying to maximise the number of Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streaks during Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch should be used instead of Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball due to the quick cast and almost non-existent travel time.

Please note that casting Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast with a https://www.wowhead.com/spell=269650/pyroclasm proc inside Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is a very minor gain. If there is even the slightest chance that you may have to cancel the cast you should not take the risk.

When using https://www.wowhead.com/item=168989/hyp ... bonus=4777 you should slightly change your Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion rotation.
The active should be used inside Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion after spending your last Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast charge, so that your last 3 spell casts were Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast. This will give you two additional Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast charges.

Opener

Opener with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205020/pyromaniac or http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch:
Pre-pot -> Pre-cast Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast if your Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast crit -> Activate Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion and enter the priority explained above.

Opener with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter:
Pre-pot and Pre-cast Pyroblast like before, however Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion should not be activated until the boss reaches 90% health. Until then, spam Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball -> Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast until the target reaches 90%, using Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames if they are at maximum charges. Use one charge of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power (if talented) at the beginning of your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter window, saving the next one for Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion.

Note that when using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter the target health and critical strike chance of the spell are checked on cast, not on impact. This means that if you cast a Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball or Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast while your target is above 90% health, but they drop below 90% health before the spell reaches them; the spell will still have 100% critical strike chance.

AOE Rotation

Because of how our http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12846/mastery:-ignite works, the target count that we begin our AOE rotation on varies depending on gear, the higher our mastery value, the better Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast becomes in an AOE scenario, and the higher the target count to begin casting Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike. But in general:
Trinket Usage

Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion no longer buffs the damage of trinkets, however some trinkets will still benefit our Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion by giving us additional stats. You should always overlap these items with Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. If you have multiple on use trinkets you should prioritise the one that benefits Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion the most during Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. You must ensure you take into account the 20 second shared cooldown when activating your second trinket as you don't want to delay Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion to wait for your first trinket.

You should generally try to avoid using two on use trinkets that rely on Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion synergy. The exception is https://www.wowhead.com/item=169314/azs ... =4798:1487 which can be used roughly 20 seconds before Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion so that you still have the https://www.wowhead.com/spell=296971/latent-arcana intellect buff when you enter Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, but you can also gain the benefit from your second trinket.

Essence Usage

In general you should be trying to use essences on cooldown, but do not use them during http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power or Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion as these buffs only affect spell damage. The exception to this rule is Lucid Dreams, proper Lucid Dreams usage can be found in the advanced section of this guide.

6 - Stats

Fire has no stat breakpoints, no hard caps, and no specific stat percentages to aim for - that's not how stats work anymore.
Fire stats weights are a little closer than some other specs with the exception of crit, and due to the large Intellect stat budget on items, item level will usually be an upgrade. Stat weights vary depending on your current gear and talents. To produce an accurate stat priority or to accurately compare items you must sim yourself. Remember that Mastery value increases significantly when cleaving, so consider itemizing for higher mastery on multi target fights but be careful to still maintain good priority damage if that's what's required. Below I have provided example weights using the simcraft default profile.

Some notes about how talents affect our stats:

7 - Gearing

As with all gearing related decisions you should trust your own sims over any generic lists or advice you see on the internet.

Corruption

Image
Image
Image
https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315529/masterful is far and away the best Corruption and the main one you should focus on getting. https://www.wowhead.com/spell=274596/blaster-master makes it extremely competitive single target and straight up unreasonable on multiple targets.

Other competitive options are: For more detail on corruption effects for all specs, check out Dorovon's thread

Your best Azerite traits are gernally https://www.wowhead.com/spell=274596/blaster-master and https://www.wowhead.com/spell=288755/wildfire depending on gear and talent setups. I recommend you visit Herodamage or Bloodmallet for full details on Azerite traits and trinket lists.

Defensive traits

S Tier (Good almost all the time)

https://ptr.wowhead.com/spell=263962/re ... protection provides a large shield every 30 seconds, in general shields are better than healing especially on difficult progression encounters where near one shots are common. This is good at preventing single heavy hits and provides high HPS on fights with constant ticking damage due to the shield always getting full value. The downside of this trait is that the application is not player controlled and thus cannot reliably be used to soak big hits.

https://ptr.wowhead.com/spell=274379/eldritch-warding provides similar advantages to https://ptr.wowhead.com/spell=263962/re ... protection but being able to control the application makes it much more reliable for heavy hits. The downside is that this costs a global, therefore its inferior on fights with high ticking damage where you would want to be using it on cooldown.

A Tier (Good in niche situations)

https://ptr.wowhead.com/spell=268437/impassive-visage provides very high HPS on fights with constant ticking damage due to it being triggered on cooldown. If you are not triggering it on cooldown however it is usually not worth the pickup.

https://ptr.wowhead.com/spell=268599/vampiric-speed is very good for fights with lots of small adds, fast dungeons and open world content but unfortunately isn't great in most raid encounters.

8 - Gems, Enchants, and Consumables

Gem and Enchants: Consumables:

9 - Racials

Image

Fire generally has more impactful racials than some of the other specs in the game. Do not underestimate races with utility racials such as goblin.

10 - Macros and Add-ons
Raidbots combined with the Simulationcraft Add-on now make simming your character incredibly easy. There is no longer an excuse to not be simming if you want to find upgrades and accurate stat weights.

Weak Auras is the only add-on that I consider mandatory for World of Warcraft raiding. It is incredibly powerful and incredibly customisable. If you don't want to go through the effort of creating your own, there are a few I recommend:
You can also check out Wago.io to find other premade Weak Aura's for both mages and boss encounters.

BigWigs or Deadly Boss Mods provide boss timers and notifications. Deadly Boss Mods is a bit more "in your face" with notifications and warnings whereas BigWigs is slightly quieter. Personal preference between the two.

Details! is by far the best damage meter out there. Makes it easier to analyse wipes and DPS while being easy on your CPU.

There are also some small optimizations that can be made through macros in order to master your fire mage.

Macro all cooldowns, racials, and items into one key.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /cast Combustion /cast Blood Fury /cast Berserking /use 11 /use 12 /use 13 /use 14 /use 2

With https://www.wowhead.com/item=174103/man ... =4822:1487

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /cast Combustion /cast Blood Fury /cast Berserking /use 11 /use 12 /use 14 /cancelaura Manifesto of Madness: Chapter One

@cursor macros automatically cast ground targeted abilities wherever your mouse cursor is, saving you a click.
Example with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike, works for all other ground targeted spells, such as http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /cast [@cursor] Flamestrike

Can be used to cancel http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block and immediately http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer. Useful when Ice Blocked in a void zone as you'll http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer out and take no damage.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /cancelaura Ice Block /cast Blink

The macro below can be used to automatically cancel http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block if you try to cast a spell while blocked; and automatically targets something if you try to cast a spell with no target.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /cancelaura Ice Block /cast Fireball /targetenemy [noexists][dead]

Uses whatever you have in the tier 3 talent row. Defaults to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow or no talent.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip /use [talent:3/2]Mirror Image; [talent:3/3]Rune of Power; Scorch

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2139/counterspell macro. Prioritizes Mouseover > Focus > Target.

Code: Select all

#showtooltip Counterspell /cast [@mouseover,harm] Counterspell;[@Focus,harm] Counterspell; [harm] Counterspell

The same macro but for http://www.wowhead.com/spell=30449/spellsteal

Code: Select all

#showtooltip Spellsteal /cast [@mouseover,harm] Spellsteal;[@Focus,harm] Spellsteal; [harm] Spellsteal

Mouseover http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=475/remove-curse

Code: Select all

#showtooltip Remove Curse /cast [@cursor]Remove Curse

11 - Advanced
Hard-Casting Flamestrike

On 2 targets it can be worth hard casting Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike if you have http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch talented. The general idea is to be always hard casting Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike, while using all Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast and http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=257541/phoenix-flames charges to generate Hot Streaks while ignoring our filler spell Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball. If you are talented into http://bfa.wowhead.com/spell=269644/searing-touch, begin using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch as normal once the boss reaches 30% health.

Do note that while this is a DPS gain if both targets are hit by the Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike and get hit by the full http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch duration. You should consider how realistic this is in dungeon and raid encounters, as due to the long Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike cast time it may be worth just playing normally.

Blaster Master

https://www.wowhead.com/spell=274596/blaster-master is a trait that gains some amount of value when gamed properly. In order to maximise our damage with this trait inside Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, we want to Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast with the minimum amount of time left on the buff so that we can maximise our stacks and uptime.
If we do the regular Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion rotation, we wont be able to Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast at the end of the buff while still generating Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak, therefore we use a combination of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch and Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast, which still generates Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=195283/hot-streak but allows us to Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast at more specific times without munching a proc. During Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, you should enter a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch and Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast with as little time as possible left on the buff before firing off a double Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast and entering another http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch. However once you reach the point near the end of Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion where you will run out of Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast charges before Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion ends, feel free to just spend Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast normally (alternating with Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast).

https://www.wowhead.com/spell=274596/blaster-master interacts slightly differently with the Lucid Dreams Azerite Essence. Because of the increased recharge time from the one use effect we don't need to space our Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=108853/fire-blast out to maximise the duration of each stack to maintain the https://www.wowhead.com/spell=274596/blaster-master buff. We can instead focus on maximising the number of 3 stack Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast inside Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion as long as we don't drop https://www.wowhead.com/spell=274596/blaster-master while Http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is still active.

This is a bit difficult to understand over text so I provided some images to help you understand the rotation.

Image

While this may seem a bit unintuitive but I recommend practicing it in game. After a few practice Combustions, how to game the trait will make a lot more sense.
It is a minor gain to cast https://www.wowhead.com/spell=2139/counterspell to increase Lucid Dreams procs. The gain is very minor, but if you aren't using https://www.wowhead.com/spell=2139/counterspell for anything else its free.
As of 8.1 this trait is no longer extremely overpowered. It is still worth gaming; but not worth stacking or sacrificing a huge amount of item levels.

Patch 8.3

Patch 8.3 adds a few new features that affect how you play your mage - namely corruption, new essences and https://www.wowhead.com/item=169223/ash ... of-resolve

Corruption

Instead of titan forging, items can now drop corrupted; giving them a number of corruption (which has negative effects on your character) and a positive bonus such as a stat or damage proc. Looking at what corruption effect does the most damage can be a little miss-leading as you will often be seeing the ceiling of such an effect, and it may come at a high corruption cost. As you begin to gear your character in patch 8.3 and have very few corruption items, you should be aiming for which corruption gives the most damage out of the box. However as we move further into the patch, and players gain more and more corruption items and options, you will instead want to squeeze as much damage as possible into each point of corruption and instead aim for the traits with the best corruption/dps ratio.

Raw DPS
Image
DPS per point of corruption
Image

Corruption is not without its cost however, and at certain breakpoints you will start to feel negative effects.

1 Corruption: https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315176/grasping-tendrils
20 Corruption: https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315169/eye-of-corruption
40 Corruption: https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315197/grand-delusions
60 Corruption: https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315857/cascading-disaster
80 Corruption: https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315179/inevitable-doom

Due to the potency of https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315197/grand-delusions, and https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315169/eye-of-corruption being fairly ignorable at times, I recommend you do not exceed 39 corruption.

New Essences

Patch 8.3 adds three new essences to the game - https://www.wowhead.com/azerite-essence ... e-dying-35, https://www.wowhead.com/azerite-essence ... iration-36 and https://www.wowhead.com/azerite-essence ... ss-void-37. With https://www.wowhead.com/azerite-essence ... e-dying-35 being the most potent for fire mage.

Due to the corruption resistance provided by these essences, you will likely always want to have one of them equipped. Note the effect is unique and equipping multiple of these essences does not further increase your corruption resistance.

Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve

https://www.wowhead.com/item=169223/ash ... of-resolve is the new legendary cloak that is acquired from Wrathion. I won't be going into detail on how to obtain or upgrade it. But I do encourage you to prioritise your cloak upgrades as they provide a hefty boost in corruption resistance.

At level 6 your cloak will gain an active ability to cleanse all corruption and grant immunity for 6 seconds on a 3 minute cool down. This should be used during periods where your negative corruption effects activate, especially during critical moments such as during Combustion or when trying to deal with an important boss mechanic.

Ny'alotha, The Waking City

This is not intended as a stand alone guide for the raid and each of it's encounters, but to complement existing guides by walking you through these fights from a mage POV. These range from a simple tips and tricks list to a full length walkthrough depending on the difficulty of the boss. If a boss guide feels sparse don't panic, its usually because there isn't a lot more to it.

1 - Wrathion
2 - Prophet Skitra
3 - Maut
4 - Dark Inquisitor Xanesh
5 - The Hivemind
6 - Vexiona
7 - Shad'har the Insatiable
8 - Drest'agath
9 - Ra-den the Despoiled
11 - Carapace of N'Zoth
12 - N'Zoth, the Corruptor

Wrathion

Wrathion is an ~8 minute fight with 2 phases. Phase 2 activates after about 2 minutes. After the raid finishes phase 2, phase 1 starts again and the fight repeats.

Recommended Talents
DPS Checks

There is no hard DPS requirement for this fight. Ideally you don't want the fight to go on for too long because of the stacking damage from https://www.wowhead.com/spell=311362/rising-heat. There is a small DPS requirement in phase 2 as you want to destroy as many shards as possible to minimise https://www.wowhead.com/spell=311362/rising-heat stacks.

The Mechanics

Phase 1

During this phase, you will not be able to move freely due to https://ptr.wowhead.com/spell=313250/creeping-madness. Every time you move you gain a stacking slow, that cannot reach 50 stacks. As a mage this mechanic is incredibly easy to deal with due to Blink/Shimmer not granting stacks. Don't forget that this also means you have more freedom in actual movement, so don't be afraid to go the extra mile with moving out with debuffs or spreading.

Your Combustion will come up right as this phase ends, do not use it immediately.
Note that https://ptr.wowhead.com/spell=313250/creeping-madness resets at the end of this phase.

Phase 2

Wrathion now spawn a series of shards around the room. This phase lasts one minute and if any shards are left they explode and give the raid a stack of https://www.wowhead.com/spell=311362/rising-heat. The goal of this phase is to destroy as many as possible.

Right as you enter this phase your Combustion will have come up. You need to now make a decision on whether or not you want to save it. If you're progressing the boss I recommend you use it during this phase because theres no real DPS requirement on the boss.

The shards don't actually have very much health. So in order to get maximum value from Ignite you should:

1. Target a shard that is far away from the raid
2. Switch to another shard if your current target is dying quickly
3. Target one of the Assassins and cleave the shards instead. Only do this if shards are dying at a comfortable speed.

After this phase ends, phase 1 begins and the fight repeats.

Prophet Skitra

Prophet Skitra is a ~5 minute fight with a single phase.

Recommended Talents
DPS Checks

There is no hard DPS requirement for this fight. You don't want the https://www.wowhead.com/npc=158781/shredded-psyche to live for very long but at the same time, you shouldn't need to save Combustion as it should die in a timely fashion with proper raid focus.

The Mechanics

This is by far the easiest encounter in the instance, and if you were able to kill it on heroic you will not spend very long here. So instead I'll just give some notes:

- The boss will phase out of the encounter area every 20%. Whenever your Combustion comes up, to ensure you don't waste it check the boss health to see if the boss is about to phase.

- You can use Frost Nova and Dragon's Breath to stop the walls that patrol room, use this to your advantage and to protect raid members who cannot see the wall.

- If you are attacking a https://www.wowhead.com/npc=158781/shredded-psyche and you notice it disappear, communicate to your raid that it has switched realms to ensure it dies on time.

Maut

Maut is a ~5 minute fight with 2 phases. Phase 2 activates after his mana reaches 100%. After the raid finishes phase 2, phase 1 starts again and the fight repeats.

Recommended Talents
DPS Checks

Phase 2 of this fight is a hard DPS check for such an early boss in the instance, and most of this fight involves optimising damage in this phase without killing yourself.

The Mechanics

Phase 1

Feel free to just pop your cooldowns on pull. Every 50 seconds the boss will apply https://www.wowhead.com/spell=314337/ancient-curse to the raid, which is usually removed by touching a https://www.wowhead.com/spell=307839/devoured-abyss. However the debuff is a curse and mages can dispel it. There are no real high priority dispel targets in this phase, so feel free to just dispel yourself whenever your raid leader tells you to.

Phase 2

This phase begins when Maut gains a full mana bar, and ends when his mana shield depletes; or when his cast finishes. Unfortunately the latter wipes the raid so we need to deplete his mana shield. This actually ends up being a relatively tight DPS check and on early kills you are very likely to have to use Combustion during this phase. So let's figure out exactly how to do that.

The first thing to do is to grab a defensive cooldown from one of your healers. You should arrange this with your raid leader/healers before you pull the boss and not on the fly, as you're going to need it at the same time every single pull.

Image

First off you will want to Combustion towards the end of this phase (ideally 20 seconds before it ends). This way healers should have the healing buff, and in the event of your death during Combustion, you got the maximum amount of damage out before hand.

During Combustion, your damage is going to spike towards the end of the duration when you've built some Ignite value, while still spamming Pyroblast. So to maximise your chances of survival you should call for this defensive cooldown a few seconds into Combustion and not before/at the start. Do not be afraid to pause for a second during Combustion if you feel like you're going to die and be very aggressive with Healthstone/Health potions. There is no other time during this fight to use them

You will likely get this phase twice. If you have a shaman in the raid, you'll want to communicate when Spirit Link Totem is being cast, as you'll want to line up one of your Combustions with it as its the safest defensive raid cooldown during this phase. The defensive cooldown you grabbed should be used during the phase where you do not have Spirit Link. If you don't have a shaman try to get two cooldowns from your healers (one for each phase).

Do not worry if you die on the first few pulls during cooldowns as it may take some practice, you'll just need to figure out each time what you or your raid could have done to keep you alive.

Dark Inquisitor Xanesh

Dark Inquisitor Xanesh is a ~7 minute fight with a single phase. Almost nothing in this fight matters except the 'football' mechanic.

Recommended Talents Tips and Tricks
  • There is no real DPS check on this fight - if you can skip a set of Void Ritual's you're much less likely to wipe as its the only thing to worry about on this fight
  • You should pay attention if void ritual is incoming soon. If you're not going to be soaking, you'll want to save your cooldowns to cleave the adds. Otherwise focus entirely on making sure you execute the Void Ritual mechanic properly. Literally nothing else matters.
The Hivemind

The Hivemind is a ~6 minute fight with 2 phases. The phases alternate as each boss swaps control of The Hivemind.

During https://www.wowhead.com/spell=307213/te ... nd-control the bosses must be tanked together, and adds spawned during this time will have increased damage.

During https://www.wowhead.com/spell=307201/ka ... nd-control the bosses must be tanked apart, and adds spawned during this time will heal when below 30% health.

Recommended Talents
DPS Checks

There is no DPS check on the boss, however during https://www.wowhead.com/spell=307201/ka ... nd-control, adds require significant attention in order to make sure they die through the healing buff.

The Mechanics

Tek'ris's Hivemind Control

Feel free to just pop your cooldowns on pull. However you should probably wait for around 10 seconds after pull before using them. This way the first wave of adds will be up as your ignite gets rolling. You'll be dealing significant damage during this phase due to the boss being stacked. This is the 'easy' phase and after this point you should save damage for https://www.wowhead.com/spell=307201/ka ... nd-control.

Ka'zir's Hivemind Control

During this phase the adds will heal a lot while below 30% health. Each wave should be dealt with slightly differently.

https://www.wowhead.com/npc=157255/aqir-drone - All of your raid should stack up together to ensure the adds also stack as they fixate. Once the adds are together you'll want to nuke them right as they hit 30%. Use a Rune of Power charge on this adds and a Living Bomb shortly before they hit 30%. If a few adds don't die, don't be lazy and focus them down.

https://www.wowhead.com/npc=160599/aqir-ravager - Simply single target this add down after the drones and it'll die.

https://www.wowhead.com/npc=157256/aqir-darter - These adds will periodically jump around, because of this it's absolutely vital that your raid focus them one by one even if they jump away. If no one in your raid has done so already, you should step up and ask for assist to mark the adds. If you just let them jump around and only cleave/focus them when it's convenient then you are absolutely going to wipe. These adds are the hardest part of the fight and have to die as soon as possible. Your second Combustion should come up around a Ravager wave during Ka'zir's Hivemind Control, this is a great time to use it on progress. Note that Dragon's Breath will interrupt their jump cast, use it if they are close together.

Vexiona

Vexiona is a ~5 minute fight with 2 phases. Phase 2 begins once the boss reaches 40% health.

Recommended Talents Tips and Tricks

Shad'har the Insatiable

Shad'har is a ~4 minute fight with 3 phases. Phase changes happen at 66% and 33%.

Recommended Talents
Tips and Tricks
  • Focus on maximising your overall damage on this encounter with one exception. Phase 2 is the most dangerous phase, your 2nd Combustion will come up towards the end of Phase 1, hold it until you enter Phase 2.
  • Each member of the raid can only feed once - if one of your raid members has already fed the boss and gets targeted by another blob, its generally up to mobile classes like yourself to grab the food and feed the boss in backup situations.

Drest'agath

Drest'agath is an ~8 minute fight with a single phase.

Recommended Talents
Tips and Tricks

Ra-den the Despoiled

Ra-den is an ~5 and a half minute fight with a two phases.

Recommended Talents Combustion Usage

Add damage on this fight can be tight, primarily on the crackling and void adds.

Image

  • First Combustion on the first set of adds at roughly 0:30.
  • Second Combustion on the third set of adds at roughly 2:40.
  • Third Combustion on the boss in the final phase.
Tips and Tricks

If you find yourself in the Vita rotation - the first thing you'll notice is that this overlaps with Combustion, its a fact of life that this will negatively impact your Combustion damage, but hopefully this tip can help you mitigate the downside.

Whenever the person before you on the same side as you gets the Vita debuff (that will be 2 people before you in the rotation), immediately blink behind them and start your Combustion.

Image

Lets say you're #4 in the rotation, you want to blink behind person #2 as soon as they get the debuff, that means the vita will hop 3 times before you need to move:
  • #2 -> #3
  • #3 -> You
  • You -> #5

Carapace of N'Zoth

Carapace of N'Zoth is a ~13 minute fight with 3 phases.

Recommended Talents
DPS Checks

The only real DPS check on this boss is the final phase, where you will be racing against your sanity bar. Realistically outside this phase all DPS checks are focusing certain adds: https://www.wowhead.com/spell=307306/ho ... hemorrhage in phase 1, https://www.wowhead.com/npc=157475/synthesis-growth in phase 2.

The Mechanics

Phase 1

The main Mythic difference is that each cast of Growth-Covered Tentacle will obstruct the platform so that you cannot cross until tentacles are destroyed, and that tentacle spawns are fixed and not random.

Cast 1:
Image

Cast 2:
Image

Ideally you want to hold your Combustion on pull and use it on the boss just as the second Growth-Covered Tentacle is coming up to get the highest ignite value. This isn't super important however as damage here particularly tight in phase 1, but if you get the choice use it here.

Phase 2

In phase 2, to maximise your Ignite value again you want to go up the right side; and use your Combustion here:

Image

It is absolutely imperative that you hit the Growths in the correct order. When you reach the top Do not hit the left Growths until the right one's are dead. The https://www.wowhead.com/npc=157461/mycelial-cyst will begin their self destruct cast as soon as they take damage. If Ignite spreads to them they will begin casting too early and you will run out of space later in the phase.

Phase 3

The strategy in this phase is fairly static, you'll be using some combination of speed pots, speed totems, and warlock gateways to dodge https://www.wowhead.com/spell=313041/infinite-darkness. Keep in mind a few things.
N'Zoth, the Corruptor

N'Zoth is a ~13 minute fight with several phases.

Recommended Talents A note on https://www.wowhead.com/spell=44457/living-bomb and https://www.wowhead.com/azerite-essence ... protocol-6. Both of these will show up in top logs because of the increased DPS on the small adds. This is completely irrelevant on progress. Your main DPS goal will always be the incredibly tight boss damage on this encounter, therefore I don't recommend them on progress.

DPS Checks

There are a lot of DPS checks on this boss. The boss itself has a hard enrage at 13 minutes (though you will die slightly before this due to the entire raid being mind controlled). Each wave of tentacles in the first phase must die before the next spawns, and each mind realm group must kill Psychus in time.

There are a lot of ways to use cooldowns on this boss, I am going to go over how to use them for Psychus group one for the majority of this guide, but I'll provide both timings here. I recommend if your group only has one mage, that you try to go in Psychus group one. However if you've multiple mages it's beneficial to spread them out to deal with Thought Harvesters.

Psychus Group One Combustion Usage:

Image
  • Use your first Combustion on pull, if you find that you're not getting full ignite value due to tentacles dying too fast, stand in the middle and switch target to the other group mid combustion.
  • Use your second Combustion once Psychus reaches 8 stacks - be careful as this will overlap with Cataclysmic Flames.
  • Your third Combustion should come up right before a wave of tentacles, use it on this wave immediately to ensure you have it up in time for the beginning of phase 2.
  • If you used your previous Combustion promptly, your fourth Combustion will come up right as you enter phase 2 and the first set of harvesters spawn, use it here as you'll be responsible for doing a lot of the damage here. However due to the the tight enrage, focus the boss and cleave the adds.
  • Your fifth Combustion will come up during an add wave, use it immediately to catch up on damage, but again focus the boss.
  • Your sixth Combustion will come up during the Mythic phase. HOLD IT FOR THE BOSS. Once you exit the mythic phase, go straight to your position, plant your feet and Combust, you will need to use it ASAP here to get another cast in.
  • At this stage you will be going insane, cast Combustion as soon as it comes up and get whatever value you can.
Psychus Group Two Combustion Usage:

Image
  • There's no real need to use your first Combustion on pull. You can if you find it helps timers later in the fight, but its likely more beneficial to use it on the second set of tentacles.
  • Use your second combustion on the first shattered ego (when the first Psychus group comes out)
  • Use your third Combustion once Psychus reaches 8 stacks.
  • Your fourth Combustion will come up right after a mindgrasp that will overlap with Thought Harvesters, due to the tight enrage, focus the boss and cleave the adds. Ensure you use Font before the mind grasp.
  • Your fifth Combustion will come up during the Mythic phase.
The Mechanics

Paranoia

On Mythic https://www.wowhead.com/spell=309980/paranoia will target every member of the raid outside the mind realm. There are situations where Sanity is more important than health and vice versa, this is going to impact how you play out each https://www.wowhead.com/spell=309980/paranoia. Generally sanity is much more likely to be an issue than health (within reason of course), therefore during https://www.wowhead.com/spell=309980/paranoia be very careful with your Blinks - generally I recommend using them as the last piece of movement (blinking directly on top of your partner). Unpredictable and quick movement is an easy way to catch your raid members off guard and cause unneeded sanity loss, sometimes it can be worth running a short distance to your partner in a predictable manner and taking a bit of damage. However on the other hand, getting to your partner quickly will minimise your overall movement, give more space to other players, and make both your movements easier to read. Remember being far from your partner does not cause sanity loss, only stacking with other players does.

When to prioritise health - getting to your partner quickly
  • You have already entered the mind realm and aren't in danger of heavy sanity loss in the future
  • You already have high sanity
  • The raid is or is about to take heavy damage, such as immediately before or after https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish
When to prioritise sanity - getting to your partner carefully
  • You have not yet entered the mind realm, and need to bank sanity for that period
  • You are low sanity
There are some situations where you should always prioritise preserving health over sanity, but I will talk about those later.

Phase 1 - Normal Realm

This phase is one of the easier parts of the fight. Position yourself to be in range of Corruptor Tentacles for interrupts, and prioritise Basher Tentacles, or tentacles that are stacked together if Bashers are dying comfortably. Maintaining Sanity in this phase is crucial as you need roughly 65 sanity to survive the first Psychus group (as you'll lose about 60). Prioritise preserving sanity.

Phase 1 - The Mind Realm

Psychus should die in this phase at around 8 stacks, until that point your damage to him is almost irrelevant, don't be lazy and hit synapses
The synapses will cast a chain lightning style ability to targets within range called https://www.wowhead.com/spell=314889/probe-mind. Some damage here is unavoidable but you should make sure to spread from your allies and to position yourself so that you are not in range of multiple synapses at once if possible:

Image

To maximise space in this phase you should position yourself ahead of Psychus so that your less mobile classes can make use of the space behind him.

Once you exit the mind phase you'll get more tentacles until the second group completes the mind phase, then you will enter phase 2.

Phase 2 - Part 1

I'm going to be using multiple diagrams to explain this phase, this is somewhat specific to the strategy your guild employs, however most strategies are similar enough that I believe if you understand the concepts you'll be able to apply it to your own guild.

This is essentially one phase, but I'm going to split it into pre-mythic phase and post-mythic phase to make it a little easier to digest whats going on.

If you're using Combustion at the start of this phase like I recommended, you should preposition for the first https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish so that you do not need to move during Combustion.

Image

The first ability cast in this phase after the https://www.wowhead.com/npc=162933/thought-harvester spawn is https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 1:
Image

Followed by https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 2:
Image

https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 2 is immediately followed up by a https://www.wowhead.com/spell=309980/paranoia + https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315772/mindgrasp combo. Make use of all the space you have to spread - as a mobile mage its up to you to get that far space. Earlier I mentioned there are some situations where you want to prioritise saving health over saving sanity - this is the first of those, run/blink to your partner immediately and do not care how much sanity you lose as the raid will be taking heavy damage here. Position yourself properly for the https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315772/mindgrasp and get ready for https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 3:
Image

This is immediately followed by https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 3, again as a mage make sure to get the far away space (this may be in the back and out of boss range - this is okay briefly):
Image

During https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 3 a new set of https://www.wowhead.com/npc=162933/thought-harvester will spawn, you will want to use your first Ice Block here to soak https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317066/harvest-thoughts (as using it here will give you another one later in the fight). Wait in Ice Block after soaking until the next https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish (4) cast has finished as this will prevent you from getting the debuff. Dropping the https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish puddles will overlap with https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317874/stupefying-glare, if you manage to avoid the debuff then position yourself a bit further from the raid after soaking as to not be a burden for those who need space, and to give you more room to dodge https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317874/stupefying-glare:
Image

This will be followed by a https://www.wowhead.com/spell=309980/paranoia + https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317874/stupefying-glare + https://www.wowhead.com/npc=162933/thought-harvester combo. If you're using two on use trinkets, use your Font of Power before the https://www.wowhead.com/spell=309980/paranoia cast as you will not get a chance to use it again until after https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317874/stupefying-glare. Move to your partner quickly again and move with the beams. As the https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317874/stupefying-glare ends use your Combustion immediately as the currently active https://www.wowhead.com/npc=162933/thought-harvester will be close to another cast and they must die before it.
Image

After take some deep breaths as it will likely be the last chance you get. The gateway into the Mythic phase will now spawn but you do not need to enter yet.

Mythic Phase

This phase is relatively simple, you will likely need to disarm one of the bombs in this phase (consuming your neck active). Just listen to your raid leader. This phase lasts a small amount over a minute. Ensure that you leave this phase with all of your cooldowns for the final stretch.

As you are leaving the phase press your auto run key before clicking the gateway, as this will cause your character to continue to run during the cutscene.

Phase 2 - Part 2

At the start of this phase blink straight to your raids stack point (which should be at the edge of the last https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish puddles), Combust the boss ASAP as you won't get another Combustion if you delay it.
Image

This is followed by https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 5, which should roughly mirror https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 3 with the exception of https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317874/stupefying-glare:
Image

From this point onwards you must ensure https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish puddles ARE NOT dropped in melee range as that space is needed later
Gateway to the other side of the room in preparation for https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 6:
Image

This is immediately followed by another https://www.wowhead.com/spell=309980/paranoia + https://www.wowhead.com/spell=315772/mindgrasp combo, this is again another point where health matters more than sanity, Blink to your partner right away and get into a clean position not too far away as you'll be dealing with https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish again right afterwards.

https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 7:
Image

During https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish 7 a new set of https://www.wowhead.com/npc=162933/thought-harvester will spawn, you will want to use your final Ice Block here to soak https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317066/harvest-thoughts. Again ensure you wait in Ice Block until the next https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish cast to avoid the debuff. All raid members with debuffs should move to the back of the room, if you managed to avoid the debuff with your Ice Block go to the front of the room:
Image

This is followed up by the final 2 relevant spells of the encounter - https://www.wowhead.com/spell=309980/paranoia followed by https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317874/stupefying-glare.

By now the room should look something like this:
Image
Stack very tightly in the left corner near the https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317102/evoke-anguish puddles, because the entire raid has https://www.wowhead.com/spell=309980/paranoia you will all instantly go insane and gain Gift of N'Zoth (+25% damage). You only dodge the next set of beams by going right. The second the https://www.wowhead.com/spell=317874/stupefying-glare spawns you must make the decision if you move and this must be done all together as a raid. Use Combustion as soon as it comes up and pray you see an Achievement pop up.

Are pyroclasm procs still worth casting in combustion? I know bracer procs are but pyroclasm procs are 225% damage as opposed to 300% damage. Also, is searing touch worth taking if you have high crit (70%)? It looks really good for early bfa raids, but I feel like searing touch at 150% damage instead of 300% is a bit rough considering you're just taking it for the guaranteed crit at that point. Unless I'm doing the math wrong.

Post hotfix its now an extremely minor loss to cast pyroclasm in combustion. With the risk associated with it I recommend not casting it unless you desperately need burst damage. Ive updated the rotation section to reflect that.

Searing touch is taken for the mobility right now - not the damage. Its especially poor combined with belt due to the DR of using both. I wouldnt recommend searing touch in pre-patch. In BFA we'll have to see how it looks post tuning.

For two target cleave yes, for fights like High Command, or Portal Keeper PF is outplaying FO at the moment due to consistent add cleave and the instant burst aoe that PF provides is superior.

Yes because the damage stacks from both Pyroclasm and your bracers. There's time however where Pyroclasm isn't the best option but maintaining the bracers are.

In the talent section theres an example Mythic+ build. For legendaries I would probably play Head/Bracers. The guide will be updated to be more in depth for Mythic+ come BFA. But I didnt consider it worth it right now.

My sims are showing the Archmage ring + bracers as slightly ahead of bracers + Koralon's for both ST and AOE fights, but by very little. For me the extra instants from PF's in combination with the new tier 1 talent make archmage superior to Koralon's for pre-patch. PF also helps in world PVP quite a bit.

Trust sims with your own character over those from other profiles. Different off pieces can cause anything to happen. Archmage certainly isn't bad after the patch.

Glynny's sims are done with Rune of Power, mine are Incanters Flow. I believe his sims are also slightly longer duration.

Is there a break point in which crit becomes the best stat? I see on guides crit as the generic best stat. Obviously you have to sim yourself but crit is always my lowest lol and it’s still terrible for me even if I’m close to 60% crit . So I guess I’m confused why it’s generalized our best if I can in no way make it mine . I want it to be I guess because since 8.0 fire has just felt so inconsistent and really lackluster for me

The opposite is the case. The more crit you get the worse it gets. At what point other secondaries take over depends on a lot of different factors such as talent choice (firestarter/searing touch devalue crit, kindling favors crit), legendary choice (belt), tier bonusses (t19/t20 devaluie crit) or how high your other stats are.

Crit gets a bit better the more you have. Stats are sort of wack in prepatch. Firestarter + belt are going to reduce your crit value and this is the optimal setup right now.

Theres no breakpoint where crit takes over. Unfortunately Fire stats change somewhat based on talents/legos. Hence why general stats dont really work. The default profile for T21 was using shard/pyromaniac which is why it heavily valued crit.
