Gunpowder Charge for Fire Mages

Unread postby Scothulhu Mon Sep 12, 2016 1:32 am

I've found that Gunpowder Charges have a pretty interesting synergy with Fire Magi right now. The first tick CAN crit and it seems like it uses your crit chance (I'm not sure if all procs and items that can crit are this way). Therefore you can force it to crit by using it during Combustion. I've also noticed through some testing that it is affected by our crit damage bonus so if you use it when you have 5 stacks of Pyretic Incantation it does 25% more damage. It is also affected by Rune of Power. It does fire damage but I'm not sure if it is affected by Burning Gaze's bonus to Fire critical damage (I only have one rank in that right now and I don't want to remove it just to test). It doesn't affect Hot Streak procs which is expected of course.

Here's some numbers:
425.5k damage base from no crit and no Rune of Power (272.8k initial hit and 4 30-40k ticks)
667.7k damage from no crit while standing on Rune of Power
704.4k damage from a crit with no Pyretic Incantation stacks or Rune of Power (1% of Burning Gaze as I said -- not sure it matters) (458.9k initial crit and 4 30-40k ticks)
1.14m damage from a crit with 5 stacks of Pyretic Incantation and Rune of Power

Considering that it's off the GCD it might be worth looking into. Gunpowder Charges are pretty cheap now that Blizzard buffed their recipe and alot of Engineers make them to level Engineering.

I don't know how this compares to potions (which this shares a CD with).

Good idea! Will try to look into it aswell so we can analyze more data and ideas.

I hope it come out better or close to better because raiding comes closer and closer and potions cost quite a lot of gold because of mats.

Don't know about potions besides prepotting, but you can use several Gunpowder Charges in a fight. The longer the fight, the more you can use.

They put them on the potion CD a bit ago. You'll only get 1.

Aha, didn't see that in the notes. But I guess it was a matter of time anyway.

Deadly grace does little over 3M in fight. That is over 2 uses, with first being higher for some reason. (Ticks affected by haste from TW?).

But, given the price, you could chug it on cooldown in M+ dungeons, something not really affordable with deadly grace if starlight rose market continues being the way it is. 30ish uses times 700k looks like pretty solid free boost.

This ghetto potion is cool. It can even be mixed with the normal one. Say you are in a short fight, or some other fight with awkward timings, and you have only 5 seconds to DPS and in that case gunpowder may be better to take the potion cooldown instead of deadly grace.
